Book title/Subtitle: Holistic education: Principles, perspectives, and practices – 30th anniversary edition
Editor/Author: Rupert C. Collister, PhD (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/University of
Toronto, University of New Brunswick, & Yorkville University)
Series title: Current Perspectives in Holistic Education
Series editor(s): Dr. John P Miller (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/University of Toronto) &
Dr. Kelli Nigh (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/University of Toronto)

Book Description:
In 1993, the, now defunct, Holistic Education Press published a book edited by Dr. Carol Flake called
“Holistic education: Principles, perspectives and practices, a book of readings based on Education 2000: A
holistic perspective”. A subsequent e-book edition was released in 1998.

Given that 2023 is the 30th anniversary for the book, we have proposed a new edited volume of
chapters by diverse authors considering today's global context and complex issues and framing the book
more explicitly in the context of lifelong and life-wide learning and curricular thinking but still rooted in
the “principles” and “working assumptions” from "The Chicago Statement" (and the subsequent
document "Education 2000") that the original book is based on, to guide this new work.
This new edited volume is aimed at the global holistic education and curriculum theorising and making
audience. It is intended to be both a primary or supplementary resource for anyone working in or
interested in the field of holistic education. It is also intended for those working or interested in
curriculum theorising and making, including those who may not necessarily work in the K-12, teacher
education, or higher education sectors. The book, comprising entirely new content, will roughly follow
the structure of the previous 1993/1997 volumes (see below).

We are calling on authors from diverse contexts, communities, and backgrounds to submit proposals for
chapters for this volume, whether they are familiar with the previous “Holistic education: Principles,
perspectives and practices, a book of readings based on Education 2000: A holistic perspective” text or not.
We are hoping for chapters that not only reflect the depth and breadth of education that can be
described as holistic across the span of lifelong and life-wide development, and chapters that explore
theorising and making of curriculum that can be described as holistic, but also chapters that encourage
us to reconstruct and reconceptualise holistic education.
We particularly encourage authors to interpret and reinterpret, to contextualise and recontextualise, to
conceptualise and reconceptualise the original “principles” and “working assumptions” in whatever
ways are appropriate for the complex issues humanity faces locally and globally today and tomorrow.

Proposed sections:
• Educating for human development
• Honouring learners as unique and diverse individuals
• The central role of embodied experience
• Holistic education
• New role/s for educators
• Freedom of choice
• Education for participatory democracy and liberation
• Educating for cultural and linguistic diversity and global citizenship
• Educating for Earth literacy and sustainability and Indigenous sovereignty
• Spirituality in/and education

Please note: The entire “The Chicago Statement" (and "Education 2000" material) that was included as
an appendix in the original book is attached to this call for your reference (see below (Flake, 1998, pp.
361-371)).

Proposal Information:
We are hoping for a relatively quick turnaround to get to the prepress stage by the end of 2023.
Proposals should be made on one single-spaced page, and consist of your name and affiliation, email
address, a tentative title, an abstract (300-350 words), and an indication of the section (see above) that
the abstract and proposed chapter reflects best. Please include an additional page with a brief biography
(200-300 words). All proposals should be sent as a single Word file of 2 pages to Rupert C. Collister
(rc_collister@hotmail.com) by end of the day 30th July 2023 with HEPPP@30 proposal in the
subject line.

Chapter Submission Information
Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by end of the day 6th August 2023 about the status of
their submission and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters, ranging from 3500 to 6,000 words in Times
New Roman 12, double spaced text, inclusive of title, abstract, manuscript, and references, should be
